A. Randolph “Randy” Munn was practically an institution in the Lenoir County community of Deep Run and surrounding areas. He served as Principal of South Lenoir High School for the majority of his professional years, and overall served as a principal for 40 years.
He came to AC from Rocky Mount High School and was an outstanding football, basketball and tennis player, winning the Kiwanis Cup as the school’s Outstanding Athlete in 1929.
In 1975 Munn was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Atlantic Christian. He was Tar Heel of the week in the Raleigh News and Observer. Munn, according to former AC president Dr. H.S. Hilley, was the first AC graduate to complete graduate work at Columbia University.
Following graduate school, he and Cora Leigh settled in Deep Run. The teachings of Christ were his guide for life, and he served as both a deacon at Deep Run First Baptist Church and as a Sunday school teacher at Deep Run Free Will Baptist.
Munn Gymnasium at South Lenoir is named in his honor, as is the award recognizing the athlete who best exhibits the ability, character and integrity which Munn epitomized.
The Munn Wing of the Irene Howell Child Center is also named in his honor.
