WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's volleyball team (3-3) pulled out all the stops in beating Shaw (0-7) in five sets, 3-2, Thursday evening at James B. Hunt High School.
The Bulldogs won by scores of 23-25, 25-17, 21-25, 28-26 and 15-13 and rallied from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to win their second straight match.
Barton was spearheaded by the tandem of freshman outside hitter Allison Gambill (Hickory, N.C.) and junior outside hitter Kaytlin Elkins (Hope Mills, N.C.), who combined for 53 kills in the victory. Gambill totaled a match-high 27 kills and 13 digs while Elkins added 26 kills and 14 digs in the victory. Elkins and Gambill rank first and second in the league in kills with 107 and 78, respectively.
Barton sophomore setter Sarah Kirk (Pearland, Texas) also had an outstanding contest – totaling six kills, 21 assists and 23 digs – in the victory.
For Shaw, Jailynn Butler (Parker, Ariz.) finished with 19 kills and 15 digs and Jada Flowers (Valrico, Fla.) dished out 49 assists but the Bears fell short of earning their first win of the season. Shaw was also hurt by 14 service errors.
Barton opens Conference Carolinas play on Friday, September 27, at 7:00 p.m., against Southern Wesleyan at Beddingfield High School while Shaw faces Livingstone next Thursday, September 26, beginning at 6:00 p.m., in Salisbury, N.C.
