GAFFNEY, S.C. – Three second-half goals guided Limestone College past the Barton College women's soccer team on Saturday as the Saints defeated the Bulldogs 4-0 at Saints Field in Gaffney, S.C.
Barton (5-3, 1-2) dropped its second consecutive Conference Carolinas matchup after being limited to just three shots in the contest. Limestone (8-1, 6-0) held a 1-0 lead at the end of the opening half but used a pair of early goals in the second half to take a comfortable advantage over BC.
Junior Rebekah Beal took a pair of shots for Barton, while junior Katie Christiansen recorded one shot for the Bulldogs. Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Davis kept the Bulldogs in the contest early, recording four saves in the opening half of action.
Selina Boveleth scored what would be the eventual game-winning goal in the 42nd minute of play off an assist from Millie Shaw. Shaw would finish with three helpers for the Saints after setting up teammates Emma Padgett and Holly Rawcliffe later in the match. Elin Svensson also scored for Limestone in the second half.
Davis would be forced to make three saves midway through the opening half as Danielle Murray recorded the first shot on frame for the Saints in the 19th minute. Rawcliffe followed with her first shot in the 22nd minute and would see Murray take another shot in the 24th minute.
Murray tallied her third shot on frame in the 41st minute before Boveleth beat Davis at the 41:09 mark for her second goal of the season to give Limestone a 1-0 advantage. The Saints ended the half holding an 8-2 advantage in shots.
Padgett opened the second half with a quick tally as she took a feed from Shaw to make it 2-0 Limestone in the 48th minute. In the 53rd minute, Padgett would assist on the Saints' third goal as Svensson tallied her second goal of the season to make it 3-0. Limestone closed the scoring in the 79th minute as Rawcliffe scored her fifth goal of the season off assists from Shaw and Sofia Lundkvist to make it 4-0.
Davis (1-2) recorded five saves in the contest despite allowing four goals. Veronica Smeltzer (8-1) didn't face a shot on goal in the victory for the Saints and recorded her sixth shutout of the season.
Barton hosts Belmont Abbey on Oct. 3 for a league matchup beginning at 5 p.m. at the BC Outdoor Athletic Complex.
