WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (7-4, 4-2) scored the first 12 goals of the contest and never looked back in a 15-3 rout of Chowan (0-9, 0-8) Wednesday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Stadium.
Sophomore attackers Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) and Angelina Scarpa (Hicksville, N.Y.) both scored five goals to lead the Bulldogs to their second straight victory. Scarpa added a pair of assists while Ashenfelter leads the team in both goals (45) and total points (53) and is just two scores away from tying the school single-season record.
Barton – which has outscored its last two opponents by a 32-10 score – also held decisive edges in both shots taken (31-9) and ground balls (28-16) in the victory. Barton sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) played the first half and earned the win while freshman Felicity Borge (Frederick, Md.) made three stops in goal after playing the final 30 minutes.
Chowan's Misten White (Portsmouth, Va.) scored twice to lead the Hawks while Mallory Dunker (Pasadena, Md.) made eight saves in the losing effort as the visitors continue to search for their first win of the year.
Barton next travels to Franklin Springs, Ga., to play Emmanuel (Ga.) on Saturday at Noon in a Conference Carolinas match while Chowan hosts Lees-McRae on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., in a league contest.
