BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Barton women's basketball team (22-4, 15-4) remained in a three-way tie for first place in the Conference Carolinas standings with a 78-72 victory over King (14-12, 10-9) Saturday afternoon at Kline Gymnasium and the Student Center Complex.
Barton sophomore center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the way with a monster double-double – 20 points and 19 rebounds – as the Bulldogs ran their winning streak to eight games. Senior guard Dinah Neal (Browns Summit, N.C.) added 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists as the visitors held a 50-31 edge on the boards in sweeping the season series from the Tornado.
King put five players in double figures – led by Kristen Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) with 19 points – but the Tornado hit just seven-of-24 three-point attempts in the losing effort.
Barton held a 43-36 halftime advantage and eventually led by as many as 17 points – 66-49 with 7:08 left in the game on a field goal by Peterkin – and the deficit was too great for the Tornado to overcome. Freshman guard Alexa Roberson (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 12 points on four treys for Barton, who stayed at the top of the league standings with Belmont Abbey and Emmanuel.
Barton remains on the road to take on Limestone in its regular season finale on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., in Gaffney, S.C., while King travels to Central, S.C., to play Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m., as well.
