WILSON, N.C. – Elizabeth City State's Jasmine Nixon made a layup with 0.2 seconds remaining in regulation to defeat the Barton College women's basketball team 63-62 on Wednesday night in Wilson Gymnasium.
The fourth quarter saw four lead changes and three ties on the scoreboard in a tightly contested game. Barton trailed by as much as 10 points early in the final period before taking a one-point lead on a layup from freshman Kianna Wynn with 4:08 to play.
Barton again took a one-point lead on back-to-back Wynn free throws with just two seconds left, leaving the Vikings with just enough time for a last-second play. ECSU threw the out-of-bounds pass the length of the court which was corralled by Nixon and laid in for the dramatic victory.
The Vikings shot 43.4 percent from the field as a team and made 17-of-18 free throw attempts, compared to a 36.9 shooting mark by the Lady Bulldogs. BC outrebounded ECSU 40-31 in the contest but committed 23 turnovers as a team.
Wynn recorded her sixth double-double of the season and third in a row with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Redhsirt-sophomore Alex Kimble chipped in 12 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Chanel Shannon made 3-of-4 shots from deep for a season-high nine points.
Elizabeth City State's Arielle Harris finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, as Imani Heggins and Nixon totaled 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Barton hosts Pfeiffer University on Saturday, December 12 at 2 p.m. in their final home game of the fall semester.
