MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Barton College sophomore Micah Clemons won two events and joined senior Justin Alford in setting a Barton school record during the men's track competition this weekend at the Trojan Challenge, hosted by University of Mount Olive.
Clemons broke his own BC record in the hammer throw for the second straight week, producing a toss of 55.84 meters (183 feet, 2 1/4 inches) that improved his NCAA provisional mark. He led a field of 17 in winning the event at Mount Olive.
The Greenville, N.C., resident also claimed first place out of 11 competitors in the javelin with a personal record mark of 43.48 meters (142 feet, 8 inches), and took fourth place out of 33 in the discus with a throw of 43.37 meters (142 feet, 3 inches).
Alford, a resident of Middlesex, N.C., posted a jump of 4.15 meters (13 feet, 7 1/4 inches) in the pole vault, surpassing the record of 4.10 meters he set in the final meet of last season. Alford was one of three competitors to make the 4.15 mark, and he was credited with second-place points.
Freshman Chianti Ghee finished second behind Clemons in the javelin with a toss of 39.18 meters while making his collegiate debut in the event.
Barton also received top-five performances in the meet from senior Aaron Jones, who placed fourth out of 33 in the 200-meter run (22.67 seconds), and senior Joel Lagat, who came in fifth out of 23 in the 1500-meter run (4:09.22).
Sophomore Avery Smith recorded PR marks in the hammer (41.88 meters) and javelin (31.36 meters), and Brian Creasey, Alex Kelly and Leslie Jones joined Ghee in establishing PR benchmarks by competing in an event for the first time collegiately.
Barton will return to action next weekend in the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University.
