WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (1-0) pulled out a 3-2 victory in thrilling fashion over Catawba (0-1) Saturday evening in its 2019 season opener at the Electric Supply Company Field.
Barton freshman forward David Breitenbach (Manheim, GERMANY) scored the match-winning in the 80th minute after taking control of a loose ball right in front of the net and scoring after a saved shot from freshman midfielder Omar Aboutaleb (Asheboro, N.C.) broke free from the goalkeeper's hands.
Catawba had tied the score at two after trailing by a 2-0 margin on a goal from Simone Trentin (Portogruaro, ITALY) just 36 seconds earlier. Trentin punched in a saved penalty kick from teammate Hunter Faust (Statesville, N.C.).
Barton scored the first two goals of the match courtesy of freshman forward Jonas Svavarsson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) and freshman midfielder Throstur Jonasson (Dalvik, ICELAND) in the 11th and 22nd minutes, respectively. Jonasson's goal was also off a rebound shot while senior goalkeeper Francisco Noguera (Santiago, CHILE) earned the win for the Bulldogs after stopping seven shots.
Catawba's Luc Denisselle (Villers-Pol, FRANCE) suffered the loss in goal despite making four saves while the Indians held a 19-14 advantage in shots taken in the losing effort.
Barton returns to the pitch when the Bulldogs take on Shaw on Wednesday in Raleigh, N.C., beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Catawba travels to Tigerville, S.C., to take on North Greenville Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
