FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Barton baseball team (27-18, 15-9) swept Emmanuel (Ga.) (20-25, 11-16), 2-0 and 5-4, Saturday in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Tommy Carey Field. The Bulldogs took all three games from the Lions in the weekend series and moved into sole possession of second place in the league regular season standings.
Game One – Barton 2, Emmanuel (Ga.) 0 (seven innings)
Barton junior Colby Shimmel (Windsor, Pa.) threw a no-hitter to lead the Bulldogs past the Lions. Shimmel (4-3) allowed just two walks in addition to three strikeouts while senior second baseman Hunter Pearre (Poolesville, Md.) finished with two hits including the game-winning, run-scoring double in the third inning which broke a scoreless tie. Shimmel also threw his second shutout on the year.
Barton senior third baseman Gatlin Pate (Grays Creek, N.C.) added an RBI in the frame while Emmanuel's Cooper Murphy (Acworth, Ga.) fell to 5-4 after taking the loss for the home squad.
Game Two – Barton 5, Emmanuel (Ga.) 4
Barton junior outfielder Trevor Edior (Los Angeles, Calif.) drove in a pair of runs including the game-winner on a groundout in the top of the tenth inning as the Bulldogs completed the sweep of the Lions. In addition, Edior's sacrifice fly in the sixth frame forced the game to extra innings.
Barton senior Chase Long (Wilson, N.C.) (2-1) earned the win after retiring the final four batters while Demetrius Foster (Douglasville, Ga.) drove in two runs and Cody Walters (Dahlonega, Ga.) (2-4) suffered the loss.
Barton next travels to Pembroke, N.C., to take on UNC Pembroke on Tuesday beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Emmanuel (Ga.) takes on Anderson in Anderson, S.C., on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., as well.
