WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College Division of Athletics celebrated the 2022-23 academic year with the Barkys, the annual awards show sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) which highlights the Bulldogs student-athletes' accomplishments. The show took place Wednesday, May 3, at Wilson Gymnasium.
Highlighting the evening were the Male and Female Athletes of the Year which were awarded to
Deshawn Owens and
Emily Bell, respectively.
Owens, a senior from Pikeville, N.C., was recently named the 2023 Conference Carolinas Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning both the men's 800-meter (1:54.55) and 1,500-meter (a school-record 3:56.42) events in late April in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Owens was also an all-conference honoree in men's indoor track and field in the one mile run in February and holds a combined six school records in Barton men's indoor and outdoor track.
Bell, a senior second baseman on the Bulldogs' softball team from Bunn, N.C., finished the season ranked second on the team in batting average (.421) and doubles (15) to go along with a team-leading 64 hits.
Bell, a three-year starter, ranks in the top ten on the school's career list in runs scored (88), total hits (151) and doubles (29). Bell was a 2022 All-Conference Carolinas honoree.
