MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's outdoor track and field teams had a pair of first-place finishes at the Adidas Trojan Challenge which concluded this past weekend at the Ray McDonald, Sr., Sports Complex. The University of Mount Olive served as the host institution.
Barton senior
Deshawn Owens (Pikeville, N.C.) won the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00.42. Owens wins the event for the second straight meet: Owens took first at the Seahawk Invitational three weeks ago. In addition, Barton senior
Quante Downey (Rocky Mount, N.C.) placed first in the men's pole vault with a school-record 13'9".
Barton junior
Braxton Fontaine (Rumford, R.I.) took sixth in the men's long jump (21'2") and eighth in the men's high jump (5'11"). Sophomore
Justin Marshall (Nashville, N.C.) was the second Bulldogs' athlete to finish in the top ten in the men's 1,500-meter run, taking seventh with a 4:13.28.
Barton also had a top-ten finish in one of the men's speed events: junior
Jacquez Durham (Clayton, N.C.) with a ninth-place spot in the 200-meter dash (22.07 seconds).
On the women's side for the Bulldogs, senior
Telina Bunch (Hampton, Va.) was the top performer thanks to her sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:11.69).
Meanwhile, Barton junior
Anna Fretwell (Sneads Ferry, N.C.) was eighth in the women's 5,000-meter run (20:53.35), freshman
Aniya Heckstall (Greensboro, N.C.) took ninth in the women's long jump (17'1") and junior
Indira Rauf (Washington, D.C.) was also ninth in the women's 200-meter dash (25.86).
The Barton outdoor track teams will next compete at the VertKlasse Meeting on Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, at Dick Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University in High Point, N.C.
