WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College athletics department has announced several coaching and staffing additions for the 2018-19 season. Below is a full list of the new staff members, with information on each new addition.
Kelly Murphy – Assistant Sports Performance / Nutrition Coach
Murphy joined Barton College in August 2018 as the Assistant Sports Performance and Nutrition Coach. She holds credentials in both strength and conditioning and nutrition as a registered dietitian. Additionally, she is responsible for providing sport nutrition services to all Barton student-athletes.
Prior to Barton, Murphy was a Sport Performance Coaching Assistant at Duke University from the summer of 2017 to the summer of 2018 where she worked with many sports including men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, track and field, women’s soccer, rowing, baseball, and football. She coached multiple All-American athletes and two NCAA Final Four teams.
Maggy Waech – Head Developmental / Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach
Waech joined Barton College in August of 2018 as the Head Developmental and Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach. She played striker for one season (2012) at Cardinal Stritch University, appearing in 10 games and scoring two goals as a freshman for the Wolves. After her freshman year, she transferred to Concordia University Wisconsin where she graduated from in 2016 with a degree in exercise physiology.
She spent the last two years as an Assistant Coach and recruiting coordinator at Wisconsin Lutheran College where the Warriors roster grew to the largest in school history. Waech earned a Master of Arts, specializing in Leadership and Innovation, from Wisconsin Lutheran College in December 2017.
Zach Ullrich - Head Developmental / Assistant Baseball Coach
Ullrich joined Barton College in August of 2018 as the Head Developmental and Assistant Baseball Coach. He joins the Bulldogs from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia where he was the recruiting coordinator, pitching coach, and first base coach. While at Roanoke, he helped guide the Maroons to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Conference Tournament Title in 2017.
He played baseball collegiately at Mansfield University from 2006-2010, helping the Mountaineers to an NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in 2010. Ullrich received his Bachelor of Arts in history with a minor in psychology from Mansfield in May 2011.
Jeff Handman - Assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coach
Handman joined Barton College in August of 2018 as the Assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coach after graduating from Lincoln Memorial University. At LMU, he was a member of the lacrosse team and made 16 appearances as a goalie for the Railsplitters.
He played in nine games in 2018, making 31 saves off 97 shots faced while posting a 1-0 record. Handman made a season-high nine saves in a 24-4 win at home against Davis & Elkins College. He is a native of Tampa, Florida.
Taylor Morton - Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach
Morton joined Barton College in August of 2018 as the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach. He spent the 2017 season as a Volunteer Assistant Coach at his Alma Mater, Lees-McRae College.
He finished a four-year career with the Bobcats in 2016, appearing in 17 matches with 14 starts. Morton was twice named to the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll and appeared in a total of 65 matches for Lees-McRae. He is a native of Pinehurst, North Carolina and graduated from Pinecrest High School. While at Pinecrest, Morton was a three-time all-conference and all-region performer.
Derek Hamm - Assistant Men's and Women's Golf Coach
Hamm joined the Barton College staff in the summer of 2018 after completing a four-year career as a member of the BC men’s golf program. He competed in 35 of Barton's 43 tournaments during his career (2014-18). He won the 2015 Cutter Creek Invitational and recorded three other top-five finishes during his career.
A native of Heath, Ohio, Hamm was named All-Conference Carolinas Third Team as a sophomore and was a Conference Carolinas All-Tournament honoree as a freshman. He received the team's Reid Hill Sportsmanship Award in 2014-15 and was named team MVP the following year. Hamm was in the lineup for back-to-back runner-up finishes in the Conference Carolinas Championship by the Bulldogs in 2017 and 2018. He graduated summa cum laude from Barton May of 2018 with a degree in business administration.
Tatyana Jackson - Assistant Women's Basketball Coach
Jackson joined the Barton College staff in the summer of 2018 after completing a four-year career as a member of the BC women’s basketball program. She appeared in 117 games with 107 starts for the Bulldogs.
She paced BC with 134 assists in 2017-18 and amassed 800 points for her career. Jackson scored a career-high 22 points against the University of Mount Olive, going 7-of-10 from the floor and 6-of-7 from downtown. She was a four-time member of the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll.
Bryce Hartman - Assistant Men’s & Women's Swimming Coach
Hartman joined Barton College early in 2018 as an Assistant Coach for the men’s and women’s swimming teams. A native of Yorktown, Va., Hartman was a member of the member of the men's swimming program at Georgetown University.
Hartman was a three-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and competed on the Hoyas' Big East Conference Championship team in 2013. He has coached the Hidenwood Tarpons Swim Team since the summer of 2013, helping Hidenwood capture its first GPSA City Meet Championship since 1993. His 2017 squad took home the championship after finishing with an undefeated mark in the league's highest division. Hartman is currently majoring in psychology at Barton with a minor in history.
James Leon – Athletic Training Intern
Leon joined Barton College in August of 2018 as an Athletic Training Intern. James joins the Bulldog staff after graduating from New Mexico State University in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. He will cover cross country, track & field, swimming, and tennis at BC.
While at New Mexico State, James completed numerous hours of clinical experience with a different variety of sports including Football, Men's and Women's Cross Country/Track and Field, Volleyball, Centennial High School, Baseball, and Rodeo teams. Leon is a native of Tucson, Arizona.
Alex Northrup – Athletic Training Intern
Northrup joined Barton College in August of 2018 as an Athletic Training Intern. He is a recent graduate from the University of South Carolina, where he studied Athletic Training.
He will be the main training contact for men’s lacrosse, men’s volleyball, and golf.
Kramer Sneed – Assistant Baseball Coach
Sneed joined Barton College in August of 2018 as an Assistant Baseball Coach. He Played at BC for three years, earning academic all-conference and first team all-conference accolades.
He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 32nd round of the 2010 draft. Sneed played three seasons with four different teams (GCL Yankees, Staten Island Yankees, Charleston Riverdogs, and Tampa Yankees) with the Yankees organization. He was a 2013 California League All-Star as a member of the Inland Empire 66ers that won the California League Championship.
Anthony Marks – Assistant Baseball Coach
Marks joined Barton College in August of 2018 as an Assistant Baseball Coach. He played collegiate baseball at Coastal Carolina University from 2013-16.
Marks was the starting left fielder and leadoff batter on the 2016 Coastal Carolina National Championship team. He was voted first-team All-Big South in 2015 and named to the College World Series All-Tournament Team in 2016. He graduated from Coastal Carolina in the fall of 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in communication.
Gavin Hite – Assistant Baseball Coach
Hite joined Barton College in August of 2018 as an Assistant Baseball Coach. He played collegiately at both Western Oregon University and New Mexico Highlands University.
He received his Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management from Washington State University in 2015. Hite played collegiate summer baseball in the West Coast League for the Kitsap BlueJackets and Bellingham Bells. He also helped guide the Seattle Studs to a National Baseball Congress (NBC) National Championship in 2013.
Wiley Jackson – Assistant Baseball Coach
Jackson joined Barton College in August of 2018 as an Assistant Baseball Coach. He comes to BC from East Carolina University where he was a graduate assistant for the baseball program.
He graduated from UNC Pembroke in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology. Jackson was a member of the Braves baseball program for four seasons and was a captain his senior year. Following his graduation from UNC Pembroke, he was an assistant coach with the Morehead City Marlins of the Coastal Plains League. Jackson earned his Master of Science in Kinesiology from ECU in 2018.
Mike Van Horn – Volunteer Assistant Softball Coach
Van Horn joined Barton College in August of 2018 as a Volunteer Assistant Softball Coach. Van Horn is a resident of Goldsboro, North Carolina.
He manages USA Softball of NC Fastpitch and Tier One Fastpitch.
