Barton announces departure of head volleyball coach

by Gary Hall

WILSON, N.C.-Barton College Head Men's and Women's Volleyball Coach Jim Freeman has announced his resignation, effective with the completion of the current academic year.

Freeman came to Barton in January of 2011, after serving in the fall of 2010 as an assistant coach at Duke University.  Prior to that time he served for 20 years at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, where his girls' volleyball teams won ten state championships.

Freeman coached the Barton women's team to an overall record of 10-15 and Conference Carolinas mark of 6-11 in his only season at the helm.  The Barton men's team, now playing in its initial season of competition, has lost all nine matches played to date.

"It has been an honor to be a member of the Barton College coaching staff, but unfortunately a number of family considerations have led me to the decision to resign my post as men's and women's volleyball coach, effective at the end of this school year," stated Freeman.  "I will always be grateful for the opportunity afforded me to be a member of the Barton community and I will certainly miss being part of it.  I'm also very thankful for the extraordinary kindness and support that I received from the Barton College administration, faculty, and staff.  The wonderful treatment I received here has been very meaningful to me and it's a big part of why Barton is such a special place.  I'm also very appreciative of the work and dedication of our student-athletes and I will sorely miss being their coach.  I wish them and the entire Barton College community all the best in the years to come as they continue their excellent work here."

"Coach Freeman has brought a high degree of expertise and professionalism to our volleyball teams." stated Gary W. Hall, Director of Athletics.  "He will clearly be missed here.  Our women's team has continued to be very competitive under his leadership and we have the foundation for what will be a very good men's team as we move forward.  Coach Freeman has served as an excellent role model for his student-athletes and has represented Barton College in a very positive manner.  We wish him and his family the best into the future."

Barton College is initiating an immediate search for the head volleyball coaching position.  The job announcement can be received by contacting Hall at
