HIGH POINT, N.C. – Barton College sophomore Larry Russell has been selected as the Conference Carolinas Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the first voting period of the outdoor season, the league announced Tuesday.
Russell was honored after posting a pair of top-five performances at the Charlotte 49er Classic that included an NCAA provisional mark and Barton outdoor school record in the long jump.
The Sicklerville, N.J., resident earned a runner-up finish among 42 participants in the long jump at the meet, trailing only Quemell Brave of NCAA Division I program Winthrop University. His effort of 7.35 meters ranked eighth nationally among NCAA Division II members on the opening weekend of outdoor competition.
Russell also tied for fourth place out of 15 participants in the high jump, recording a mark of 2.0 meters. The leap was just one one-hundredth of a meter off his own BC outdoor record in that event, and .03 off an NCAA provisional standard.
Last week, Russell became the first Barton athlete to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, where he placed 15th in the long jump and eighth in the high jump, earning the school's first NCAA Division II All-America designation in that event.
Russell is receiving the league's Athlete of the Week honor for the second time in his career in outdoor competition and for the sixth time overall.
