Men’s tennis picks up two league wins on weekend road trip

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College men's tennis team claimed back-to-back Conference Carolinas wins against North Greenville University and Southern Wesleyan University over the weekend in South Carolina.

Barton 6, North Greenville 3

The Bulldogs began competition in conference play with a convincing win over NGU, but trailed after the completion of doubles play. Barton's No. 3 team of Jake McCartney and Ermanno Galimberti claimed BC's lone point with an 8-3 win.

Barton took control of the match in singles play, winning five of the six matchups. McCartney got the ball rolling for the Bulldogs with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 before NGU earned its final point with a win in the No. 4 position.

Galimberti won 6-4, 6-2 as the No. 5 singles player, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win from No. 6 Jesus Gil. Senior Yaxi Pintado clinched the win for Barton after a 6-7 (4-6), 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3.

Freshman Julian Bosch put the finishing touches on the win for Barton, defeating last year's Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and the No. 32 ranked player in the country Sjors van Eck 7-6 (6-0), 3-6, 7-6 (6-4) in the No. 1 spot.

Barton 7, Southern Wesleyan 2

Barton's carried momentum into its contest with the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan on Saturday, leading 2-1 after doubles play. Bosch and Gil team together to win 8-1 as the No. 1 tandem, while Galimberti and McCartney won 8-6 at No. 3 for the duo's second consecutive victory.

McCartney, ranked No. 20 overall in the southeast region and playing in the team's No. 1 singles position, won 6-1, 7-5. Galimberti followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win of his own at No. 5, while Pintado once again sealed the match win for Barton with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3.

Bosch, a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 2 and Gil, an 8-5 victor at No. 6 earned the final points for Barton in the match.

Barton (3-3, 2-0) will return to the court on Wednesday, March 1 with a league contest against Pfeiffer University in Wilson, N.C. at the Barton Tennis Complex.
