Barton takes eight shot lead at Echo Farms

WILMINGTON, N.C.-All five Bulldogs are in the top-10 as the Barton College men's golf team has constructed an eight-shot overnight lead in the Echo Farms Intercollegiate hosted by Mars Hill University on Saturday.
Barton shot an opening round 300 on a chilly morning at the Echo Farms Golf and Country Club. The Bulldogs total is eight strokes better than second place Cape Fear Community College. Brevard College and Spartanburg Methodist College are tied for third at 310. The host Lions and North Carolina Wesleyan College are tied for fifth at 317. Mars Hill's second team is in seventh while Ohio Valley University, University of Virginia at Wise and St. Anselm College round out the field in eighth to 10th place.
Senior Nicolas Fonseca shot a one-over par round of 73 on the 6,822-yard, par-72 layout and is in a tie for the lead with Tanner Pearson from Cape Fear.
Senior Dermot McElhennon had the Bulldogs second best scorecard with a round of 75. McElhennon is in a three-way tie for fourth out of 53 golfers. Senior Micah Lawrence, junior Austin Doerr and freshman Kyle Gaster all added matching totals of four-over 76 and are tied together in seventh place.
Junior Brian Quilter is representing the Royal Blue and White as an individual and he fired an opening round 78 to sneak into the top-20 in a tie for 17th.
Barton will be paired with Cape Fear and Spartanburg Methodist in the final round. The Bulldogs tee times begin at 9:20 a.m.
