HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Barton College swimming teams swept the Conference Carolinas Men's and Women's Swimmer-of-the-Week honors today with junior Robert Zamorano (Woodstock, Ga.) and sophomore Kleanza Cathers (Kitimat, British Columbia, CANADA) both earning the award. A Barton duo has swept the honor for the third time this year as well.
Zamorano led Barton to an easy victory in a tri-meet over Chowan and St. Andrews this past Saturday in the home finale with three first-place finishes: the 100-yard (49.85) and the 1,000-yard (10:27.54) freestyle events in addition to the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.09). The Bulldogs totaled 194 points compared to the Hawks (61 points) and the Knights (four).
Cathers wins the award for the second time this year. In a tri-meet triumph over Chowan and Saint Andrews on Saturday in Rocky Mount, N.C., Cathers placed first in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.18) and 200-yard backstroke (2:16.44) and swam the first leg of the winning 200-yard medley (1:56.62) and 200-yard freestyle (1:33.09) relays for the Bulldogs. Barton totaled 175 points compared to Chowan (75) and St. Andrews (nine).
Cathers, who set the school record in the 200-yard backstroke earlier this year with a time of 2:10.69, was a 2018 All-Conference Carolinas honoree in three events: the 500-yard, the 1,000-yard and 1,650-yard freestyle races.
The Barton men's and women's swimming teams will next compete in the 2019 Conference Carolinas Championships beginning on Wednesday, February 6, at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C. The event lasts four days.
