ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's swimming teams defeated both Chowan and Saint Andrews in their home finale Saturday afternoon at the Harrison Family YMCA.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs took first place with 194 points while the Hawks tallied 61 points and the Knights finished with four points. In the women's competition, Barton totaled 175 points and was followed by Chowan (75) and Saint Andrews (nine). The Bulldogs won 25 of the 28 combined events as well.
In the men's races, Barton was led by sophomore Jaksa Gabric (Zagreb, CROATIA). Gabric won three events: the 100-yard backstroke (56.09), the 50-yard freestyle (22:27) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.89).
In addition, freshman Jonathan York (Midlothian, Va.) and junior Robert Zamorano (Woodstock, Ga.) both won two events for the Bulldogs. York finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.73) and 200-yard backstroke (1:58.41) while Zamorano touched the wall first in the 100-yard (49.85) and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:27.54) events. Zamorano was also part of the Bulldogs' winning 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:33.09)
In the women's competition, three Barton swimmers won a pair of events: sophomore Alayna Moore (Terre Haute, Ind.) in the 50-yard (25.92) and 100-yard freestyle (56.45), sophomore Kleanza Cathers (Kitimat, British Columbia, CANADA) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.18) and 200-yard backstroke (2:16.44) and sophomore Kazia Patzer (Snellville, Ga.) in the 100-yard (1:02.37) and 200-yard butterfly (2:26.41). Both Cathers and Moore anchored the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay that finished with a time of 1:42.09.
The Barton men's and women's swimming teams will next compete in the 2019 Conference Carolinas Championships beginning on Wednesday, February 6, in Charlotte, N.C., at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. The championship stretches over a four-day period.
