HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. – The Barton swimming teams competed Friday evening at Leggett Pool on the campus of Hampden-Sydney College. The men's squad won easily over both Randolph-Macon (147-40) and Hampden-Sydney (152-33) while the women's team for the Bulldogs downed Hollins (158.5-31.5) but fell to Randolph-Macon by a 109-95 score.
In the men's competition, several swimmers won multiple events including freshmen Colton Spence (New Hill, N.C.) and Tegan Brown (Acworth, Ga.). Spence finished first in both the 100-meter freestyle (54.86) and 200-meter freestyle (1:57.97) and was part of the team's first-place 200-meter freestyle relay squad (1:39.53).
Brown prevailed in the 100-meter butterfly (59.87) and 200-meter individual medley (2:15.55) and was part of the quartet which won the 400-meter relay squad with a time of 4:03.50 for the Bulldogs.
On the women's side, sophomore Kleanza Cathers (Kitimat, British Columbia, CANADA) was the star for the Bulldogs as she won three events: the 800-meter freestyle (9:46.54), the 200-meter individual medley (2:32.72) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:49.23) events. In addition, sophomore Nicola Macdonald (Durban, SOUTH AFRICA) finished first in both the 200-meter freestyle (2:16.00) and 100-meter freestyle (1:01.32).
The Barton women's swimming team will host UNC Pembroke on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., at the Harrison Family YMCA while the men's squad will compete in an intersquad scrimmage.
